Foot Mobilisation Therapy - Alpine Podiatry

Foot Mobilisation Therapy

Foot mobilisation therapy is a manual therapy that has been specifically designed in order to aid your foot and ankle function.

It does so by targeting stiff, mal-aligned, or dysfunctional joints and improves the function and mobility of your lower limbs. This manual therapy involves finding and treating the cause of your pain by assessing each bone and joint in the foot instead of simply treating the symptoms. It will also use your body’s natural repair process; this will help you reduce pain and improve the foot’s posture over the 6-week course.

What can I expect from an FMT initial appointment?

Your podiatrist will thoroughly examine your gait, posture, and lower limbs. This is done by completing a full biomechanical assessment. If they feel that foot mobilisation therapy is the best treatment for you, they will create a bespoke treatment plan of mobilisation sessions and takehome exercises to maintain your progress. Mobilisation requires a 6 week commitment to weekly sessions. Some chronic conditions may benefit from twice weekly initially. The benefit will be felt at the 6 week point, many patients feel better incrementally weekly but not all, and this does not affect the overall outcome. In conjunction with the mobilisation, you will be prescribed a specific exercises plan to be completed at home between appointments, it order to get the best treatment outcome it is important that the plan is carried out. Many patients who choose foot mobilisation as a treatment choose to have custom orthotics, usually these are cast near the end of the 6 week course.
